The process of acne scar revision
Step by step
Acne scar revision performed at a Specialist level is a meticulous and well-planned medical procedure. There are several stages in scar revision including a medical history, examination, mapping, planning, procedure, recovery and follow-ups and prevention. This ensures that you not only have the best method of scar revision, but also the safest.
All treatments are tailored according to the acne scar type, skin type of the patient, and downtime. The process of scar revision can take one or two visits, or in complicated cases, up to 6 months to complete.
1. Discussion and medical history
This process involves an open but in depth discussion in regards to your previous acne history, the location of acne scars and your goals of scar revision. We also discuss the down time you can take after each procedure, and go thru a full medical history.
2. Examination of acne scars
Under special lighting and magnification your acne scars are carefully examined to determine the scar type. We also examine for any background skin conditions such as rosacea (redness), background pigmentation and your skin type. Identifying your scar type is of utmost importance, as it will enable us to tailor the best possible treatments. Most patients will have several acne scar types.
3. Planning - Mapping and photography
The stage involves mapping and photographing each scar group/ type. A treatment plan is then constructed based upon each type of scar. The ideal plan will depend on your scar type, skin type and down time. This is a very complex, but well documented treatment plan. During the planning stage we will also address any pain relief prior to procedures.
4. Scar revision procedure
Laser procedures are conducted in our main Queensland Health accredited laser operating theatre. Treatment time will vary from 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on the complexity of the procedure.
Lighter treatment such as TCA CROSS, and RadioFrequency treatment will not require any anaesthetic. Laser resurfacing procedures are conducted under partial sedation. Our Specialists ensure that pain is kept to a very minimum for all treatments.
5. Procedure follow up
Follow up following any form of acne scar revision is essential as this speeds up recovery time, reduces complication rates and allows you to see how you are progressing with your scar treatments. With more complex cases such as laser resurfacing and surgery you will be followed up regularly until your skin heals. Treatments such as TCA CROSS, Fraxel fractional laser treatments and EMatrix RadioFrequency will have a much quicker heal time.
6. Acne Scar Prevention – the final step
Once your acne scar revision program is complete, your treating Specialist will discuss methods of scar prevention and will prescribe you a simple skin care regime that can further aid in collagen remodelling. The most common regime we use is a combination of Vitamin A creams and AHA Fruit acids.
